John Kelly, Senior Vice President Global Responsibility & Public Policy Starbucks
John Kelly is responsible for establishing the global responsibility and public policy agenda for Starbucks. He and his team lead Starbucks strategies and functions, including public policy, government affairs, corporate responsibility, and ethical sourcing and environmental impact for all brands, across all business units and geographic regions.
John came to Starbucks from Microsoft, where he led a variety of global policy, regulatory, and political initiatives over his 15‑year career there. Most recently, John was Vice President of the Industry Affairs Group in Microsoft’s Legal and Corporate Affairs Department. Prior to that, John worked in Europe as the leader of Corporate Affairs for Europe, MiddleEast, and Africa, where he led policy and CSR strategies. He returned to Redmond to help start Microsoft’s citizenship program, before taking on his current role. John was one of the early members of its Government Affairs organization, helping steward the growth and importance of that organization to Microsoft.
Prior to his time at Microsoft, John worked for nearly a decade in Washington, D.C., in a variety of government policy roles.
A long‑time fan and customer of Starbucks, John’s favorite Starbucks beverage is a tall Sumatra from the Clover. John, his wife Heidi, and their three children Alden, 12, Elizabeth, 10, and Jack, 7, live in Kirkland. John’s interests include hiking and cross‑country skiing, particularly in the North Cascades, and he is active in his local scouting organization. He supports various veterans initiatives and recently participated in the 2013 Climb to Fight Breast Cancer. He is also a member of the Washington State Bar Association.
