Bishop Edward A. Smith, Zoe Christian Fellowship, “Helping Abandoned Former Foster Youth, a Collaborative Approach”
Edward A. Smith was born in Los Angeles, California. He received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in February 1973. He spent the first eleven years of his Christian life sitting under the teaching ministry of Dr. Frederick K.C. Price, Founder/Pastor of Crenshaw Christian Center, Los Angeles, California.
Edward Smith spent seven years as an instructor of Zoe Christian Leadership Training Center and served as an Elder and Executive Board member under the tutelage of Bishop Frank L. Stewart. Pastor Ed was ordained into the gospel ministry by Bishop Stewart in November 1982. In 1986 Bishop Stewart was led by the Lord to finance Pastor Ed and Vanessa’s first overseas missions’ trip. Bishop Stewart was also instrumental in preparing Pastor Ed for ministry, which led to Pastor Ed starting Zoe Christian Fellowship of Cerritos in 1989. This would be the first church plant to come from Zoe Christian Fellowship of Los Angeles with a prominent focus on missions’ outreach. In 1995, Pastor Ed and the members of Zoe moved to their present church complex in Whittier, thereby becoming Zoe Christian Fellowship of Whittier.
Antioch Missions International, a division of Zoe, has made Zoe one of the premier African American missions’ churches in the country. AMI has sent over 3000 people on short term missions’ trips and has invested over three million dollars in missionary funding and development. Through AMI Zoe supports twenty-five missionaries in sixteen countries. AMI probably supports more African American missionaries than any other church in America.
In 2009 Pastor Ed partnered with Pastor Bill Winston of Living Word Christian Center, Illinois to head up the Joseph Business School in the Los Angeles Region. He led the first South African Government sponsored trip of Black entrepreneurs to South Africa and was spotlighted by CNN Headline News for his ministry involvement there.
The ministry of Pastor Ed Smith has focused on helping individuals discover their potential and live their life for God’s purpose. Over the last twenty years hundreds of youth in the church have attended college and scores of members have excelled by becoming leaders and bringing the gospel of the kingdom to every part of society; in business, government, entertainment, etc. A strong part of the foundation of Pastor Ed’s ministry is in the area of prayer. His teaching on prayer has been motivating in leading both his church and broader communities to make changes in their life and in the world through the power of prayer. In 2013 Pastor Ed expanded his ministry with the inclusion of Awyken, a certified Christian life coaching and personal development ministry. In 2016 Pastor Ed was ordained Bishop of Zoe Association International.
Pastor Ed earned a BA in Applied Mathematics and a MBA in Marketing/Finance from UCLA. He is much sought after as speaker for conferences and seminars in the U.S., as well as abroad. He was invited to Russia in 1995 to participate in training the staff of the fourth largest bank in Russia. His speaking/ministry engagements have taken him to Japan, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and South Africa.
Pastor Ed has been married to Vanessa Smith since 1975 and is blessed to have four wonderful children: Joshua (Marsee), Eddie, Aaron, and Naomi, as well as 3 grandsons: Josue, A.J., and Angelo.
